I actually had a discussion about the gypsy term, which actually stems from Egyptian and is indeed uses with negative connotations. I was told that Roma was the preferred term by musicians I interviewed in the U.S. but I only heard gypsy in Spain.Fly Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18191335990973494972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-11833492025132677392014-05-29T01:54:24.062-07:002014-05-29T01:54:24.062-07:00Indeed, there are racial and cultures elements of ...Indeed, there are racial and cultures elements of which one has to be careful. I am already looking forward to your post. I must admit that living here in the UK whenever I travel to Spain it's still a shock to hear some of the expressions they have and use. Same as in Cuba, really. When it comes to flamenco, the word "gitano" (Gypsy) still has a negative connotation despite the fact that Gypsy music and culture has been one of Spain's main exports for decades. Go figure! :-)

Greetings from London.A Cuban In Londonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16423293358605007539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-67554761567540159212014-05-27T19:49:42.561-07:002014-05-27T19:49:42.561-07:00Tex, it was awesome indeed.Tex, it was awesome indeed.Fly Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18191335990973494972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-15698675062684754582014-05-27T13:44:53.301-07:002014-05-27T13:44:53.301-07:00how awesome for you!how awesome for you!TexWisGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13641962051044162710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-26439906282677794012014-05-26T11:37:21.887-07:002014-05-26T11:37:21.887-07:00Cubano, Oh I know all about the perspectives and c...Cubano, Oh I know all about the perspectives and classifications of flamenco in Spanish culture. I dipped into it a little bit when I was there but you know there are other racial and cultural issues that also factor in. I will be doing another post on flamenco dance where I'll venture a little into the cultural significance, which I'm sure you'll appreciate.Fly Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18191335990973494972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-73501626634144534082014-05-26T10:46:58.169-07:002014-05-26T10:46:58.169-07:00What can I say? As I have found out to my cost not ALL Spaniards agree to flamenco being the "essence" of Spanish culture. Go to the north (west), Galicia and you will be given short shrift for it, north (east), Basque country and they have their own very idiosyncratic culture. Barcelona is a world of its own. Still, I love flamenco. Like Gandt, I have stayed in the Sierra Nevada, in the Alpujarra mountains and the scenery is breath-taking.

Greetings from London.A Cuban In Londonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16423293358605007539noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-76244581115135609082014-05-24T05:43:00.583-07:002014-05-24T05:43:00.583-07:00Andrew, thanks so much.
