Racism isn't going away but at least people can acknowledge it and attempt to address it.Fly Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18191335990973494972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-71670102638990873662015-01-27T18:23:55.856-08:002015-01-27T18:23:55.856-08:00A very powerful post and something that a lot of p...A very powerful post and something that a lot of people don't even know where to start the conversation, myself included. It's glossed over much too often, especially in travel writing. Of course, the U.S. isn't the only country with racism problems but these problems are not really being addressed so the effects are worse than some other situations.Fly Girlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18191335990973494972noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7770083379947049507.post-12968772067046626672015-01-26T07:57:48.645-08:002015-01-26T07:57:48.645-08:00I've visited the USA four times up till now, a...I've visited the USA four times up till now, and there's certainly a lot to admire. The smiling, open and forward thinking side of your country that I experienced, is the image of America that I grew up with back in Australia -- and it seems to me that this is still the most universal view of it back home, and over here in Chile, too. I think this is especially so in the case of younger affluent members of society.

Every country has a darker side to it, and this needs to be exposed honestly, and these problems -- which are like some terribly kind of disease -- need to be rooted out, once and for all.

What I just can't stand is selfishness and greed in any form, which I believe is the root cause of all this hate and violence against minorities.

And I must add that what you say about the Charlie Hebdo attack, Rosalind, echoes my thoughts exactly. Of course it was an abominable crime, but the imbalance in response to thousands being murdered in Africa, etc, is incomprehensible. I agree with most of your points, including the difference between the way we reacted to Charlie and the massacre in Nigeria.

Very good post. Intelligently articulated and backed-up by the evidence we've seen so far. Thanks.

Greetings from London.A Cuban In Londonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16423293358605007539noreply@blogger.com
